Playoff Structure

After week 13 in the proposed schedule, a 16-team playoff bracket will be created. 10 of the playoff bids will go to the 10 conference champions, as determined by the winners of the Conference Championship Games. The remaining 6 bids will go to the 6 highest BCS ranked teams after week 13 who aren't conference champions.

WHO MAKES IT TO THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME?
The team with the best conference record (not overall record) in a particular division advances to the conference championship game. In the event of a tie, the following will be used, in order: (1) head-to-head, (2) divisional record, (3) BCS ranking.

BRACKET SEEDING
The seeding will be determined by the team's BCS rank out of the 16 teams who receive bids.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is an example playoff bracket based on the 2009 season
-----------------------------------------------------------

2009 Conference Champions
(Note: this would be much neater if every conference had a championship game, as in this proposal.)

Texas - Big 12
East Carolina - Conference USA
Central Michigan - MAC
Alabama - SEC
Georgia Tech - ACC
Cincinnati - Big East
Ohio State - Big 10
Texas Christian (TCU) - Mountain West
Oregon - Pacific 10
Troy - Sun Belt

BCS Standings At Regular Season's End:
(Note: I've indicated who would've made the playoffs, and why.)

1. Alabama (13-0) - SEC Champs
2. Texas (13-0) - Big 12 Champs
3. Cincinnati (12-0) - Big East Champs
4. TCU (12-0) - Mountain West Champs
5. Florida (12-1) - At Large Bid #1
6. Boise State (13-0) - At Large Big #2
(the WAC would be broken up in my proposal, so Boise State is a weird example)
7. Oregon (10-2) - Pac 10 Champs
8. Ohio State (10-2) - Big Ten Champs
9. Georgia Tech (11-2) - ACC Champs
10. Iowa (10-2) - At Large Bid #3
11. Virginia Tech (9-3) - At Large Bid #4
12. LSU (9-3) - At Large Bid #5
13. Penn State (10-2) - At Large Bid #6

15. Miami (9-3) - OUT
16. West Virginia (9-3) - OUT
17. Pittsburgh (9-3) - OUT
18. Oregon State (8-4) - OUT
19. Oklahoma State (9-3) - OUT

22. Nebraska (9-4) - OUT
23. Utah (9-3) - OUT
24. USC (8-4) - OUT
25. Wisconsin (9-3) - OUT

Unranked teams who would have made the playoffs:

Overview

Currently, Division I college football has 116 teams divided into 11 conferences of various sizes, as well as 4 additional independent teams, making a total of 120 teams. The problem with the current system has been discussed at length and, whether you agree or disagree with the arguments that have been made, that discussion is not the purpose of this blog.

The basis of this proposal that the 120 Division I teams should be divided equally into 10 conferences. This necessitates the adjustment of many of the current conferences, as well as the dissolution of 1 current conference (the WAC). The idea behind this move is that a uniform conference structure lends itself to a uniform way to determine a playoff system that is fair and consistent, and relies less on human estimation of teams to determine a champion.

The College Football Answer

This blog is a simple proposal on restructuring NCAA Division I college football to increase the league's fairness and consistency through a clear structure, as well as promoting fan enjoyment of the game. The proposal will be broken down into the following sections:

1. Overview
2. New Conferences and Divisions
3. Season Schedule Structure
4. Playoff Structure

Based on feedback, this proposal will change, and the relative merits of the various ideas I hear presented will be discussed.

Enjoy!
